Shohei Ohtani, nicknamed “Shotime,” made his MLB debut in 2018 and quickly became a sensation due to his rare ability to excel as both a pitcher and a hitter. His immediate impact earned him the American League (AL) Rookie of the Year Award.
Ohtani’s historic 2021 season was recognized with two Guinness World Records. He became the first MLB player to record 100+ innings pitched and 100+ strikeouts while also achieving 100+ RBIs, hits, and runs as a batter in a single season. That same year, he made history as the first player to start the MLB All-Star Game as both a pitcher and a designated hitter.
He was awarded the 2021 American League Most Valuable Player Award and became the 16th recipient of the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award, formally recognizing his 2021 season as historically significant and unprecedented. In 2022, Ohtani continued to break barriers by becoming the first player in the modern era to qualify for both the hitting and pitching leaderboards in the same season.
Ohtani completed another remarkable campaign in 2023, becoming the first player in MLB history to record 10 wins and 40 home runs in a single season. He also became the first Japanese-born player to win a major league home run title and the first player in MLB history to win the MVP Award by unanimous vote twice. That year, he was named MVP of the 2023 World Baseball Classic, won his third consecutive Edgar Martínez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award, his second Silver Slugger Award, his second Players Choice American League Outstanding Player Award, and his second Associated Press Athlete of the Year honor. He was also named Los Angeles Angels Player of the Year by his teammates.
Following the 2023 season, Ohtani signed a record-setting 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the largest contract in professional sports history at the time.
